Training competetive play

Recommended Posts

Hello!

My name is Stan, and I have tried to remaster AOE II. It was my childhood game, since I was really young, and was really bad at that time.
I have grown up now, and want to play AOE on competetive niveau. I have been training myself, and researching alot about the game.
I have improved alot, I thought I could go online and play competetive against other players. This went great for some times.
But then when I tried 2v2, I was losing badly. And then one enemy left, so it became 2v1, which eventually resulted in a humiliated loss..

This hit me so hard I noticed I really suck at this game. I want to become really good, and be able to win in AOE II.
Is there anyone in this forum who considers himself great at this game? And could he teach me some tips & tricks?

I have masterd the "castle age rush". But then still I seem to be slow on my army, and also at wars. I do not know where the biggest problem is.
And I really want to improve!

Kind regards,

Well I condsider myself really bad at the game. In economy especially. But I do know a lot (two) of people who are good at this game and they usually post tips and all those stuff on YouTube.

One is ZeroEmpires. He has a lot of videos on AoEII and here's a link to his channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/ZeroEmpires

Another is Spirit of the Law. Posts a lot of useful videos, mostly analisation on Civs and Units. Link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChzLZJo-SxuPHz-oYKAIC_g

And if you want some random videos, not on tips and tricks in winning, but on stuff like map making, and all those less important stuff, you can go ahead to BRoman Studios. This guy isn't a good AoE player according to his own words, but he posts things like how to enable unit stacking in the Map Editor, and how to change names of other players. Kinda inactive now, but he should post more videos soon I guess... Link to his channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZjbtJJffL-csWPl-mKuydA

So check out ZeroEmpires and Spirit of the Law for useful videos on winning in Age of Empires II, and if you want to have a rest and play with the map editor or just want to add some awesome stuff and what not, check out BRoman Studios.

I would not recommend Spirit of the Law if you want to improve your game. He makes interesting videos mechanics-wise but they won't help you improve actually playing the game. He doesn't have that much actual gameplay experince going for him. More educational Youtube channels would be

Resonance22: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQw1tmt0jiuluT-Jv3VyLyQ

or JoRo: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8vsQH5AUpQIrT57DgGkrMg (aimed a bit more at higher levels)

One of the biggest things you can do is improve your build orders. Look up a build order that you want to do, for example a 22 population scout rush. You can calculate the time where you want to reach Feudal Age when everything is perfect by multiplying the amount of villagers you build with 25 seconds (the build time) and add the time for the new age research.

In this example that's (22-4+1)*25+130 = 10:05 (22 population, minus 3 starting villagers and a scout, plus loom, times 25, plus 130s for feudal age). Train this build order offline against the AI, check the times you get against the perfect time, and try again. You should be able to get within 30 seconds of the perfect time offline (online it's more difficult with lag)
